Sciatic (nerve root pain) is a symptom that includes localised pain in the buttock region, which may extend down the back of the thigh, in severe cases this pain may extend into the calf or foot. Some other symptoms that may be experienced are: pins and needles, tingly sensations and numbness to some or all of the lower leg, causing a limp or weakness in the legs. There are many causes for sciatica, your osteopath will diagnose the underlying cause and advise you of the best course of treatment. One common cause of sciatica is spasm of the piriformis muscle. In this case the osteopath will provide treatment to relax this muscle and restore mobility to the joints of pelvis to prevent the pain recurring. Other causes can be joint related or inflammation in the area surrounding the nerve and this restricts the flow of information up and down the nerve to the brain, causing the above mentioned symptoms. Sciatica can vary in intensity and severity from person to person. Exercise advice is an essential part of your recovery, gentle movement within the pain range is beneficial to help the muscles and joints to restore their normal range of movement, other stretches, stabilizing and strengthening exercise advice will be discussed during your treatment and individually tailored to suit. One of the best reasons to see an Osteopath is for reassurance about your healing process and addressing/ identifying any areas of concern that may require further investigation.
